Fourth Element

Fourth Element is a Cornwall-based technical dive brand founded in 1999 with a focus on performance, innovation, and high-quality thermal protection. While they are world-renowned for their drysuit undersuits (like the Arctic and Halo 3D) and technical wetsuits, they have evolved into a global leader in sustainable "ocean-positive" business practices.

The "OceanPositive" Ethos

Launched as a response to the global plastic crisis, the OceanPositive range is more than just a product line; it is a commitment to a circular economy. The brand focuses on "celebrating the positive" by actively removing waste from the ocean and repurposing it into high-performance gear.

  • Ghost Net Recovery. Their swimwear, rashguards and Thermocline range are made using Econyl. This is 100% regenerated nylon yarn sourced from "ghost" fishing nets.
  • Alternative Materials. They use Yulex Pure, which is 100% plant based natural rubber used as an alternative to the traditional neoprene.
  • Recycled Plastic Waste. The Rec Fins range are made from 100% recycled post-consumer plastic waste.
  • Mask Straps are used from 100% recycled polyester
  • Zero-Plastic Packaging. All packaging is made from primarily cassava starch and recycled paper, along with recycled cardboard & paper. They also use vegetable-based ink and plastic-free tape.

Advocacy and Ethics

Fourth Element doesn't just sell gear; they fund the solution. They are key partners with the Global Ghost Gear Initiative (GGGI) and support organizations like the Reef-World Foundation (Green Fins) to promote sustainable diving. By choosing this brand, divers aren't just buying equipment; they are directly participating in the removal of ocean plastic and the reduction of the dive industry's carbon footprint.

Whilst we do stock Fourth Element products in store, we are unable to stock ALL products and items, so why not head over to their website for a browse to order directly - or get in touch with us directly if you see something you like. Click the image below to have a look:

Waterhaul

Who They Are

Based in Cornwall, Waterhaul was founded by marine biologists who were tired of seeing "ghost" fishing nets (lost or discarded nets) washing up on shores. Because fishing nets are made from high-quality plastic designed to survive the harsh ocean environment, they are incredibly difficult to break down—but they make for indestructible consumer products.

Their Core Products

Sunglasses: This is their flagship line. The frames are made from 100% recycled fishing nets. They use Italian-made mineral glass lenses (which are infinitely recyclable and scratch-resistant) rather than plastic lenses.

Prescription Eyewear: They offer an "optical" range, allowing you to turn recycled ocean plastic into your everyday glasses.

Litter Pickers: In a full-circle move, they use recycled aluminium and plastic to create professional-grade litter pickers, which they sell to help others clean the beach.

Knives & Tools: They produce folding knives with handles made from recycled nets, designed for sailors and divers.

Why They Are Relatable to Divers

A Visual Impact: When you wear a pair of Waterhaul glasses, you are literally wearing a piece of the problem that has been solved. Each frame is often named after the location where the nets were recovered.

Anti-Fog & Clarity: For divers who appreciate clear vision, their use of mineral glass lenses is a huge selling point. They offer much better optical clarity than the polycarbonate lenses found in most sports sunglasses.

Durability: Their frames are exceptionally "bendy" and tough. They don't snap easily, which is ideal for the rugged environment of a dive boat or a beach bag.

Supporting the "Circular Economy": Many divers participate in beach cleans. Waterhaul provides the incentive by showing that the "trash" collected actually has a high value and can be transformed into something beautiful.

The "Ocean-Positive" Loop

Waterhaul doesn't just buy recycled plastic; they often coordinate with fishers and community groups to collect the nets directly. By providing a "retirement" path for old fishing gear, they prevent it from ever entering the ocean in the first place.
