Your global passport to adventure starts here. The SSI Open Water programme is the world’s most popular way to become a certified diver.

At Dorset Diving, we believe in building confident divers through a structured progression. All our pool training takes place at the Dolphin Leisure Centre in Poole, where we start in the main pool to master the basics before moving to the 3.8m diving pit to perfect your buoyancy and ear equalisation.

CHOOSE YOUR PATH:

1. Full Open Water Course: The complete package. Includes all digital theory, pool sessions (Main Pool & Pit), and 4 qualifying open water dives at Vobster Quay. Certified to dive to 18m anywhere in the world.

2. Scuba Diver: Perfect for those with limited time. This "pre-entry" level covers the first half of the Open Water course. You'll complete the pool sessions and 2 open water dives, allowing you to dive to 12m under the supervision of a Professional.

3. Referral Diver: Heading abroad? Complete all your theory and pool training with us in Poole. We then provide the referral paperwork for you to complete your 4 qualifying dives in warmer waters at any SSI centre globally.

Whichever path you choose, our expert pro team ensures you become a safe, capable diver ready to explore the 70% of our planet that lies beneath the surface.

Common Questions

Do I need to be a strong swimmer?
No athlete status required! You just need to be comfortable in the water. You'll need to show you can swim 200m (any style, no time limit) and float for 10 minutes. If you're at all nervous, come for a 'Try Scuba' session first!
What if I have trouble equalising my ears?
This is our #1 question. We teach you multiple techniques to "pop" your ears comfortably from day one. We go very slowly, we never rush, and we make sure you're comfortable every inch of the way.
How long does it take to get certified?
It’s flexible, but typically involves: Digital learning at home, one or two Friday night pool sessions in Poole, and two days of open water diving (4 dives total). We work around your schedule.
Are there any medical restrictions?
Most people can dive! You’ll fill out a standard form. If you have history of asthma or heart/lung conditions, you might just need a quick doctor’s sign-off. Message us and we’ll send you the form to check.
Do I have to buy all my own equipment?
No. We provide all the specialized kit (Regulators, BCD, Cylinders, Wetsuits) for the whole course. Most divers eventually want their own mask and fins, but we've got you covered for your training.
Is it dangerous?
Scuba is incredibly safe when taught correctly. You're always with a pro. And sharks? In the UK, we only see shy Dogfish and Catsharks—they are small, harmless, and a total highlight to spot!
