SSI Fish Identification — eLearning & Certification Credit Only

Learn how to recognise the incredible diversity of fish found in our oceans with the SSI Fish Identification specialty. This course helps you understand how to identify and classify fish species, recognise their behaviour, and appreciate their role in marine ecosystems. It includes your academic training and certification credit only, which you can complete online before choosing to join optional in-water identification dives with an SSI Dive Centre.

Optional practical training (booked separately)

To put your new knowledge into practice, you can choose to complete in-water identification dives with an SSI Instructor. These optional sessions may include:

• Guided dives focused on identifying local fish species
• Recording and logging fish sightings during your dives
• Learning to observe fish behaviour and habitat preferences
• Participating in citizen science or reef monitoring programmes

These sessions are not included with this eLearning product and must be arranged separately with Dorset Diving or another SSI Dive Centre offering the Fish Identification programme.

Important

• Always confirm that your chosen dive centre offers SSI Fish Identification training and in-water ecology dives if you wish to participate.
• You do not need to be a certified diver to take this online course, but any in-water activities require an Open Water Diver certification or equivalent.
• Bringing a fish identification slate or dive log can enhance your practical learning experience.
