SSI Gas Blender — eLearning & Certification Credit Only
Learn the science and safety behind breathing gas preparation with the SSI Gas Blender specialty. This course is designed for divers and dive professionals who want to understand how to correctly and safely blend breathing gases such as nitrox and trimix. It provides your academic training and certification credit only, allowing you to complete the theory online before booking your optional hands-on blending workshop with an SSI Dive Centre.
What you’ll learn online
- Gas laws and the physics of partial pressures
- Properties and handling of oxygen, nitrogen, and helium
- Gas analysis, quality control, and safety protocols
- Step-by-step gas blending procedures (continuous and partial pressure)
- Working with gas cylinders, valves, and filling systems
- Documentation, labelling, and regulatory requirements
- Environmental and safety considerations for gas handling
Optional practical training (booked separately)
To gain practical blending experience, you can participate in an in-person gas blending session with an SSI Instructor or technician. These workshops are strongly recommended and may include:
- Performing gas analysis and oxygen cleaning checks
- Filling cylinders using partial pressure or continuous blending systems
- Recording mixes and applying proper gas labels
- Implementing safety procedures in a working fill station
The practical training is not included with this eLearning product and must be arranged separately with Dorset Diving or another SSI Dive Centre offering the Gas Blender programme.
Important
- Please confirm that your chosen dive centre offers SSI Gas Blender training and has an approved blending facility before booking.
- You must be at least 18 years old and certified as an Enriched Air Nitrox Diver (or equivalent) to enrol.
- This course is required for divers who wish to become SSI Technical Gas Blenders or work in fill stations and technical diving support roles.
