SSI Nudibranch Ecology — eLearning & Certification Credit Only
Immerse yourself in the wondrous world of nudibranchs (sea slugs) with the SSI Nudibranch Ecology programme. This online course consists of theory modules that explore the fascinating biology, ecology, and conservation of these striking marine invertebrates. Completing the digital lessons earns you your SSI Nudibranch Ecology certification (academic credit only).
What you’ll learn online
- Classification, diversity, and habitats of nudibranchs
- How they move and locomotor adaptations
- Their sensory and respiratory systems
- Reproductive strategies and life cycles
- Feeding habits, prey relationships, and ecological roles
- Defense mechanisms, mimicry, and chemical strategies
- Human interactions, research methods, and conservation efforts
Optional practical training (booked separately)
While the eLearning version covers all the academic components, if you’d like to **see nudibranchs in action underwater**, you can book **guided observation dives or specialty identification dives**. In these practical sessions you’ll:
- Use scuba skills to approach reef areas and microhabitats where nudibranchs dwell
- Observe, document, and identify species in situ using slates, underwater photography or sketching
- Apply learned techniques to distinguish species by color, shape, textures, and behaviors
- Practice non-invasive observation protocols and enhance your survey / recording methods
These dives are not included in the eLearning product and must be scheduled separately through Dorset Diving Services or any SSI Dive Centre that offers the Nudibranch Ecology specialty.
Important notes & prerequisites
- Some dive centres may require you to already hold a recreational scuba certification (e.g. Open Water Diver or equivalent) before participating in underwater sessions — be sure to check with the centre.
- Always confirm with the dive centre you intend to use that they offer the SSI Nudibranch Ecology / ecology specialties and can facilitate the practical dives before committing to bookings.
- You may need to complete a medical questionnaire or obtain physician clearance depending on local regulations.
Free registration
To get started, you can register for a free SSI account and affiliate with our dive centre here: Register with Dorset Diving Services.
What’s next?
After completing Nudibranch Ecology, you might wish to expand your marine life knowledge with specialties such as Marine Invertebrate Ecology, Marine Ecology, or Coral Identification, adding further depth to your diving and conservation education.
