SSI CCR Technical Extended Range — eLearning & Certification Credit Only

Take your rebreather diving further with the SSI CCR Technical Extended Range programme — the next step in advanced closed-circuit diving. This course builds on your CCR Extended Range knowledge, qualifying you to plan and execute deep decompression dives using trimix gas blends. This product provides your academic training and certification credit only; practical training dives must be booked separately with an authorised SSI Extended Range Instructor Trainer.

What you’ll learn online

  • Advanced theory of CCR diving and decompression physiology
  • Trimix gas principles, blending, and management for CCR use
  • CCR setup, calibration, bailout configuration, and maintenance
  • Mission planning and redundancy for extended range dives
  • Team protocols, communication, and in-dive gas switching procedures
  • Emergency scenarios, bailout ascent planning, and recovery drills
  • Problem-solving and stress management during technical dives
  • Environmental and conservation considerations for technical operations

Required practical training (booked separately)

To complete your certification, you must undertake in-water training dives with an authorised SSI Extended Range Instructor Trainer. These dives are designed to develop real-world competence with your CCR system at technical depths and typically include:

  • Progressive CCR dives using normoxic and trimix gas blends
  • Complex decompression management up to 60 metres (200 feet)
  • Bailout procedures, emergency drills, and failure management
  • Stage cylinder handling and multi-gas switch planning
  • System monitoring, buoyancy control, and ascent profile optimisation
  • Team coordination and simulated problem resolution under pressure

The practical sessions are not included with this eLearning product and must be arranged separately with Dorset Diving or another SSI Extended Range Dive Centre that offers the CCR Technical Extended Range programme.

Important prerequisites

  • You must be at least 18 years old and certified as an SSI CCR Extended Range Diver (or equivalent).
  • A minimum of 70 logged dives, including at least 50 hours on the specific CCR unit you intend to use, is required before practical training.
  • Valid first aid, CPR, and oxygen administration certifications (within 24 months) are required, along with a current diving medical signed by a physician.
  • Divers must use an approved CCR unit that meets SSI Extended Range standards and demonstrate proficiency in its pre-dive setup and operation.
  • Confirm that the dive centre you intend to use offers the SSI CCR Technical Extended Range programme and has access to appropriate deep-water training sites.
