SSI Night & Limited Visibility — eLearning & Certification Credit Only

Discover the magic of diving after dark and learn to stay confident when visibility drops with the SSI Night & Limited Visibility specialty. This course teaches you how to safely plan and conduct dives in low-light and challenging conditions while revealing a completely different side of the underwater world. It includes your academic training and certification credit only — complete the theory online, then add the in-water sessions to experience the thrill of night diving for yourself.

What you’ll learn online

  • Planning and preparation for night and low-visibility dives
  • Choosing and using torches, markers, and signalling devices
  • Communication techniques and buddy procedures in the dark
  • Navigation and orientation strategies with limited references
  • Light handling and avoiding disorientation
  • Understanding nocturnal marine life behaviour and ecology
  • Safety procedures and emergency planning for night diving

Required practical training (booked separately)

To earn your full SSI Night & Limited Visibility certification, you must complete in-water training dives with an SSI Instructor. These dives will allow you to apply what you’ve learned online and typically include:

  • Three open water dives, including at least one night dive
  • Setting up and using dive lights effectively underwater
  • Mastering entry, exit, and navigation techniques in low visibility
  • Managing buoyancy and team positioning in darkness
  • Communicating with your buddy using light signals

These practical sessions are not included with this eLearning product and must be arranged separately with Dorset Diving or another SSI Dive Centre offering the Night & Limited Visibility specialty.

Important

  • Always confirm that your chosen dive centre offers SSI Night & Limited Visibility training and has suitable conditions for night diving.
  • You must hold an Open Water Diver certification (or equivalent) to take part in the in-water sessions.
  • A reliable dive torch, backup light, and surface marker buoy (SMB) are required for the practical dives — check with your dive centre for equipment availability.
