SSI Night & Limited Visibility — eLearning or Full Course

Experience the magic of diving after dark with the SSI Night & Limited Visibility specialty. This course teaches you how to safely and confidently explore the underwater world at night or in low-visibility conditions, using lights, navigation techniques, and teamwork to make every dive calm, controlled, and unforgettable.

Choose your course option

  • eLearning & Certification Credit Only – Complete the academic portion online and earn your certification credit. You can then add optional in-water training later with Dorset Diving or another SSI Dive Centre.
  • Full Course (with Dives) – Includes the online theory, certification, and practical in-water training sessions with an SSI Instructor. You’ll learn how to plan, prepare, and conduct night dives with confidence.

What you’ll learn online

  • How light behaves underwater and how to use dive lights effectively
  • Communication techniques using torches and hand signals in the dark
  • Navigation and orientation during night or limited visibility dives
  • Buddy contact, positioning, and teamwork underwater
  • Planning, preparation, and safety procedures for low-visibility diving
  • Understanding nocturnal marine life behaviour and environmental awareness

Full Course — Practical Training

The Full Course option includes in-water sessions with a Dorset Diving Instructor, where you’ll gain real experience and confidence by:

  • Setting up and using torches and backup lights correctly
  • Entering and exiting the water safely at night
  • Practising communication, navigation, and buddy awareness
  • Adjusting buoyancy and movement for low-light environments
  • Observing and identifying nocturnal marine life safely and respectfully

Equipment & Costs

  • All full courses include full kit hire, except for your mask, snorkel, and boots, which every diver should own personally.
  • These can be purchased at Dorset Diving Services before or during your training.
  • Entry fees to open water sites (such as Vobster Quay) and boat dives, if applicable, are not included.

Prerequisites

  • You must hold an Open Water Diver certification (or equivalent) before taking the in-water sessions.
